AIFL MOURNS THE LOSS OF SENATOR DANIEL INOUYE

American War Hero, Strong Friend of Israel, Dead at 88

New York, December 19, 2012.

The America Israel Friendship League is deeply saddened by the death of Senator Daniel Inouye, a true American patriot and strong friend of Israel. Kenneth Bialkin, AIFL Chairman, said "For decades, Senator Inouye's work as Chairman of the Appropriations Committee of the United States Senate helped assure that Israel would have the material ability to defend itself. Among the programs Inouye helped foster is the 'Iron Dome' system;" Bialkin noted that the Senator visited Israel as recently as January, 2012. "As President Peres has said," recalled Bialkin, Senator Inouye "stood by Israel's side in the most demanding and difficult moments."

At 19, the future senator was a member of the most highly decorated military unit in U.S. history. Inouye lost his right arm in combat in Europe. He received the Medal of Honor"for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty" in recognition of his leading an assault against the Germans despite having lost an arm in fighting in Italy.

He represented Hawaii since its admission to the Union in 1959, first as a Congressman, then, since 1963, as Senator. Inouye association with Israel was almost 69 years long.

"The Jewish People has lost a great friend," said Bialkin. "The senator was a strong advocate for peace and Israel's unquestioned security. He will be greatly missed."
