The America-Israel Friendship League Mourns the Passing of Jack Kemp
~Former Congressman was active member of AIFL Board of Directors for many years~
New York, NY, May 5th - The America-Israel Friendship League mourns the untimely passing of Jack Kemp who served as an active member of the AIFL Board of Directors for many years.
In addressing the AIFL 2007 Annual Partners for Democracy Dinner, Mr. Kemp said ''I have tried on my 18 trips to Israel to be a voice in the Republican Party for the State of Israel, for the important strategic relationship we share, and for those values of our Judeo-Christian Heritage that are so important to the blessing of America.''
AIFL Chairman, Kenneth J. Bialkin said in a statement issued today, “He was our friend and our guide and was devoted to the strong bond of friendship between the people of the United States and Israel. We are grateful that in a life devoted to public service on behalf of the United States and to excellence in his sports and public interest concerns, he shared his friendship and leadership skills with so many others.'
Mr. Kemp was an active supporter and voice within the AIFL. In a recent message to AIFL board members Mr. Kemp remarked, “The America Israel Friendship League is very special to the Kemp family … we have 17 grandchildren, and they are growing up in the freest country in the world. They will all visit Israel. I want every Kemp grandchild to know what that little tiny sliver of land is like. The wonderful people who have helped bring us to a point in the history of the world in which we can truly look out and say, with the right policies and the right ideas and the right leadership and the right men and women and the right positions, we can change the world.''
The America-Israel Friendship League Board of Directors, lay leadership, staff and community supporter’s thoughts and prayers are with Joanne, Jack, Jimmy and his 17 grandchildren.

Israeli Youth Basketball Team From Embattled Sderot in NJ to Play Friendship Game with
~Sports University AAU All Stars led by NBA Legend Darryl Dawkins is pumped up for the international showdown~
~ Special Appearance by NJ Nets Player Chris Douglas Roberts and Coach Bobby Hurley to be in attendance~
New York, NY, March 26th - A group of young Israeli athletes from the rocket battered region of southern Israel and Sderot are coming to NY and NJ under the auspices of the AIFL to escape from the conflict and play ball. A friendship match has been organized between the Israeli athletes and the famous Sports University AAU All Stars coached by former NBA superstar Daryl Dawkins, April 5th from 2-4:30pm at Golden Door Charter School, 180 9th Street, Jersey City.
Coach Bobby Hurley, and several of the NJ Nets NBA players will be in attendance for the game.
The game and participants are all available for interview and media coverage.
“Anytime kids aren’t allowed to be kids and enjoy the game of their choice it’s a tragedy. Our hearts go out these Israeli youths and the terrible situation they live under everyday. We’re really excited to be able to play ball with them, even for a day, to show our solidarity and help them take their minds off the conflict,' said Coach Dawkins. Sports University AAU All Stars is an elite 14 and under through 16 and under basketball program coached and supervised by six successful mentors based at the Sports University facility in Fairfield NJ. It is their mission to use the game of basketball to build student athletes that have a clear understanding of the responsibilities that go into leadership. They have program that emphasizes academics, character, commitment and building a social contract with their respective communities.
Israeli basketball legend Tal Brody will be coaching the AIFL Southern Israel Basketball All Stars while they play in NY and NJ. The Southern Israel All Stars come from all over the embattled area of Southern Israel and are looking forward to playing basketball in the America and get away from their rocket-bombarded towns for a few days.

AIFL Expresses Concern that US aid not support Hamas
New York, NY, March 3rd - In an open letter to United States Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, America-Israel Friendship League leaders urged Secretary Clinton to ensure $900 million in US Aid for Gaza will not end up in the hands of Hamas.
The letter, from AIFL Chairman Kenneth Bialkin and President Harley Lippman, makes the following points:
“The AIFL understands the humanitarian purpose of the Donors Conference to assist in efforts to bolster the Palestinian economy. We have deep concern however, that U.S. aid will end up in the hands of Hamas which is a terrorist organization dedicated to the violent destruction of the State of Israel. We welcome your demand last week that Hamas renounce terrorism and recognize Israel as a condition for dealing with the United States… In seeking to improve the living conditions of the Palestinian people, the United States should not abandon its principles. Is it now not the time for the entire Free World to insist that Hamas recognize the lessons of 60 years of Israel's existence as a member of the United Nations and insist that Hamas accept and recognize the legitimacy of the State of Israel?'
AIFL leadership also offered their thoughts as guidance for the policies of the United States in situations, which are faced today in so many parts of the world.
“Democracy and freedom are legitimate objectives of American foreign policy - but expectations of achievement must be realistic. Sometimes the results come slowly, sometimes not at all, but that is no argument against the policy or a reason to despair or to abandon the objective of representative government.
Also, experience teaches there is no reason to expect that elections where voters are free and able to select their leaders will produce a government committed to peaceful resolution of conflicts or an acceptance of the norms of individual and human rights for all. We have only to look at the election in Iran, which freely produced a regime of Islamic terror; and the electoral victory of Hamas, which freely advocates the destruction of Israel. None of these freely elected regimes were or are deserving of automatic support of their objectives… Israel's strong attack on Hamas in Gaza while trying to minimize civilian casualties shows how delicate the balance must be in fighting a terrorist regime no matter how representative it may be of the population which elected them. But failure to act against terror is a prescription for disaster.
Sincerely, Kenneth J. Bialkin Harley Lippman Chairman of the Board President

AIFL Applauds Italy and the US for Pulling out of Durban II
~Anti-racism conference in Geneva to be used as an anti-Israeli forum~ ~AIFL calls on all peace seeking nations to follow Italy and America’s boycott~
New York, NY, March 10th - The America Israel Friendship League commended Italy and the United States for publicly pulling out of the UN Durban review conference, the anti-racism event scheduled for Geneva in April and increasingly seen as a forum to isolate and condemn Israel. Durban II is the follow-up meeting to the disastrous United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance held in Durban, South Africa, in 2001. The 2001 conference fell victim to nations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that were bent on using it to criticize Israel and the United States. After unsuccessfully trying to counter those efforts, the U.S. delegation walked out of the conference. “Durban II, organized by the gravely disappointing United Nations Human Rights Council, is following in the footsteps of the 2001 conference, and should be roundly rejected and boycotted by all responsible democratic nations. The AIFL applauds the Obama administration for refusing to participate in this charade, and the government of Italy, which became the first European country to declare it would not participate in the Durban review conference,' said Kenneth J. Bialkin, Chairman of the Board, and Harley Lippman, President, of the America-Israel Friendship League.

America-Israel Friendship League Chapter in Richmond, Virginia
In Celebration of Israel's 60th Anniversary, Virginia Attorneys Generals McDonnell and Rosenthal Will Launch America-Israel Friendship League Chapter in Richmond
“With a special grassroots focus, America-Israel Friendship League programs in the past 35 years have been introducing Americans of all creeds and ethnicities to the tapestry of Israel, and Israelis to America, celebrating the values common to both cultures and countries,' says former Attorney General of the state of Virginia, Stephen D. Rosenthal.
The America Israel Friendship League (AIFL) is a non-sectarian, non- political, not for profit organization strengthening the ties between the people of the United States and Israel; bridging distances to reveal the beauty, the humanity, and the modern democratic values that define both nations. The AIFL has chapters in New York, Tucson, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco. To celebrate Israel's 60th anniversary, current and former Virginia Attorneys Generals, Robert F. McDonnell, and Stephen D. Rosenthal, will launch the AIFL Chapter in Richmond, VA. This new chapter will bring the AIFL's activities to the Richmond region and enable those interested to partake in a celebration of common values.
After a recent trip to Israel, Attorney General Robert F. McDonnell, joined together with his predecessor, Stephen D. Rosenthal, to form a committee to create the AIFL Chapter in Virginia. In their call for support, McDonnell and Rosenthal iterated, “AIFL programs offer participants the rare opportunity to get to know on a personal level the people with whom they share interests, values, and professions. Many AIFL program participants attest to the impact the program had on their lives and many more become ambassadors of goodwill in their communities... We think it is crucial that the ongoing relationship between Virginia and Israel is important to both, and see AIFL as a leader in building this friendship.'
Attorney General Robert F. McDonnell is available for interview upon request.

Arizona High School Students Recently Return from Israel
~Youth Ambassadors Participate in Only Formal Secondary School Exchange Between Israel & US~
New York, NY- With the world once again focused on the Middle East and the conflict raging in Southern Israel and Gaza, it’s important to remember the human face of these tragic events. The America-Israel Friendship League has dedicated itself for over three decades to creating deep, meaningful and lasting people to people relationships between American and Israeli youth through their innovative Youth Ambassador Student Exchange (YASE) program.
Every year, students from all over Israel- Jews, Muslims, and Christians- and students from across the United States take part in the AIFL’s YASE exchange. These exchanges have helped foster lifelong friendships and created long-lasting bonds between the peoples of these two great democracies.
Just this year dozens of students from Arizona, Utah, California, and Oklahoma went to Israel for several weeks while their Israeli peers came here to the states to learn about each other’s country, culture and community. Many of these students have just recently returned from Israel and are eager to tell their stories.
“This trip has truly been amazing for me. I had never fathomed I would be so lucky to be chosen, nonetheless actually be here for this experience. It has all been simply amazing, influencing and changing me in the most remarkable ways. I not only get to meet, see, talk to and become friends with some awesome people, but I have grown an intimate relationship with my country, the people who have led it and made it was it is. There are so many issues I now know more deeply. Maybe, most importantly I now know that I can help to make things better. “ - Robin Soliz, 2008 Youth Ambassador The Youth Ambassador Student Exchange is one of the world’s most innovative global education program and the only formal public secondary exchange between the United States and Israel. Arabs from Nazareth have visited Jews in Los Angeles; surfers from San Diego have explored the waves of Herzliya and, most recently, students from Moscow have traveled to Philadelphia. Following the belief that experience is among our most effective learning tools, the AIFL has sent students from more than 60 cities overseas on a mind-expanding journey they will never forget. There are two primary objectives for the Youth Ambassador Student Exchange: to encourage inter-cultural understanding and communication between high school youth in the United States, Israel and the Russian Federation, and to develop the awareness that the strength of a democracy rests in the diversity of its people and in its social, political and economic institutions. Essential to the Youth Ambassador Student Exchange is a commitment to an educational process, which provides high school students and teachers with an opportunity for experimental learning. Through study and travel, program participants are encouraged to appreciate, understand and accept different cultures from the cosmopolitan to the provincial. Harley Lippman as AIFL’s New President
Kenneth J. Bialkin, Chairman of the America-Israel Friendship League (AIFL) Announces the Election of Harley Lippman as AIFL’s New President
“I am pleased to welcome Harley Lippman as AIFL’s president and I am looking forward to him working with me to continue the League’s important role of strengthening the ties between the people of the United States and Israel…The board of directors is confident that Harley's passion and dedication to Israel will help him be a good leader and all of us are looking forward to working with him in the years ahead.'' - Kenneth J. Bialkin Esq., Chairman, AIFL
Kenneth J. Bialkin has served as Chairman of the America-Israel Friendship League since 1995. He was also elected as AIFL president in 2003 when Mort Zuckerman became the AIFL honorary president. During his tenure, Mr. Bialkin has helped the League develop as a major grassroots organization in support of the unique friendship between the United States and Israel, representing a solid coalition of Americans of all faiths, ethnic backgrounds, political persuasions and geographic regions.
“The America Israel Friendship League believes in the strength of grass roots people-to-people programs to create enduring and fruitful relations between Americans and Israelis. It’s my honor to help lead this mission and create new and lasting connections between these two great nations.' - Harley Lippman, President, AIFL
New York, November10- Mr. Harley Lippman, Founder and CEO of Genesis10, is the newly elected President of the America-Israel Friendship League. The America-Israel Friendship League (AIFL) is a non-sectarian, non- political, not for profit organization strengthening the ties between the people of the United States and Israel; bridging distances to reveal the beauty, the humanity, and the modern democratic values that define both nations. (www.aifl.org)
As a businessman, Mr. Lippman’s company was included on ComputerWorld’s list of Top 100 Emerging Growth Companies. In 2002, he received Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Mr. Lippman earned a B.A. from SUNY Stony Brook and a Master’s from Columbia University’s School of International Affairs—graduating at the top of his class in both cases. While in school, he went to Eastern Europe (Poland) on a Fulbright Program for almost two years. Mr. Lippman also serves on the boards of many businesses, educational and cultural organizations. He is an active fundraiser for various political candidates. Mr. Lippman serves, by Presidential appointment with Senatorial confirmation, as a member of the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad. Mr. Lippman also serves as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the American Jewish Congress, and has been appointed to the Manhattan Political Chair for AIPAC.
'I feel that as a Jew, an American, and a human being, I have to give back,' Lippman said. It is with these sentiments that Lippman finances the extramural needs of Israel’s most famous armored brigade, an elite reconnaissance unit in the Israeli Defense Forces. It is with these same thoughts that he has adopted an entire orphanage in Cambodia. Along with fully funding the needs of the orphanage, Lippman visits there once each year with his family, teaching English to the children each time he goes. He has also been instrumental in helping to start the Cambodian Bo-Bo Campaign, which enables the children to help others. 'Children in neighboring villages around the orphanage walk barefoot, and tend to cut the soles of their feet on the ground. The campaign gives the orphans bandages and ointment, enabling them to care for other kids in surrounding villages,' said Lippman. 'It’s about empowering these children to help themselves by helping others.'
Harley Lippman relates the seeds of his success to a piece of advice he received from his father, who said, ''either grow it, dig it, or build it.'' Lippman has created a career doing all three - with his technology consulting firm, Genesis10, he has dug in to build a company with revenues of $134 million in 2006, having grown organically from just $6.9 million in less than seven years. But the work hasn't just paid financial dividends. A great deal of what Harley Lippman gains from business fuels the same spirit that propelled Genesis10, building upon the values of familial trust and the need to build and grow.
In that vein, Lippman has taken on a variety of philanthropic projects. Many of them illustrate the relationship that Lippman has to his Jewish roots and the bond he feels with the state of Israel. And he believes that such values inform all aspects of his life.

WHY AMERICA SUPPORTS ISRAEL
January 12, 2009, New York
With the world once again focused on the Middle East amidst the conflict raging in Southern Israel and Gaza, it’s important to remember why America stands so strongly with Israel when much of the world turns hostile. What binds our countries together in time of crisis is the special relationship between America and Israel, the strong values and heritage we share, and the common threats we face from extremism and terror.
A new administration will soon take office in Washington. And a new government will be elected in Israel in just a few weeks. Whatever the outcome of the latest battle, and whoever leads Israel after the elections, the ties that connect us remain strong as ever. Our mutual commitment to individual freedoms and democracy serves to enhance our common determination to live free from tyranny and oppression. It is not always popular to be on the side of tolerance and freedom, especially when our enemies use our respect for human life and dignity against us by hiding amongst civilians and targeting innocents with rockets and bombs. Standing side by side with democracies fighting terror is essential, however, if we wish for the principals of freedom to prevail in our common fight against extremism.
American support for Israel’s current defensive operation against Hamas’ nihilistic rocket salvos, as seen in myriad op-eds and pro-Israel rallies across the country, exemplifies American’s deep understanding for Israel’s beleaguered democracy. Without this support Israel would not be able to carry on its operation to end the reign of Hamas terror on its southern border. This would be a victory for terrorism everywhere.
With its Iranian benefactors chanting “Death to America, Death to Israel' on a daily basis, coupled with Tehran’s fanatical pursuit of nuclear weapons, Hamas cannot be allowed to strike the only democracy in the Middle East with impunity. Every unanswered rocket sends a clear message to extremists everywhere that time is on their side, and the supporters of freedom and Democracy do not have the stomach to fight for their principles and freedoms.
Luckily, the American people understand this and have stood up in great numbers with loud and clear voices in support of Israel’s determination to defend liberty for its citizens. And, more importantly, liberty for all peace-seeking peoples the world over. When Israel prevails in this fight for freedom it will be due in large measure to the shared perspective and determination by our two countries that we must never succumb to the forces of terrorism and those who motivated by hatred of our cherished values.

Press Release
Israeli High School Athletes in NY on Exchange Program
Student Athletes Attended National Student Leadership Conference
A group of 16 student athletes from all over Israel have come to the US this summer to participate in the National Student Leadership Conference through the America-Israel Friendship League’s US-Israel Citizenship Through Sports Exchange (CTSE) program. This innovative program has been bringing student athletes together from the US and Israel for the past eight years. Since 2000, CTSE has generated cross-cultural dialogue and democratic engagement among American and Israeli student athletes. One of our most dynamic programs, CTSE encourages students to openly and honestly address the issues affecting their lives, communities and schools. Together, Israeli and American participants receive the training to confront problems impacting both nations, including school violence and threats to security and democracy. CTSE has directly involved hundreds of American and Israeli high school student athletes of many faiths and ethnicities, and impacted hundreds more in their schools, communities and clubs. “I am very proud to be an International Spokesperson for AIFL’s U.S. - Israel ‘Citizenship Through Sports’ Exchange (CTSE) It is very close to my heart because it teaches fair play, good citizenship, respect and the appreciation of diversity. These values are the essence of life, and without these qualities, I don’t think that I would have been successful in my swimming career' - Lenny Krayzelburg (Three time Olympic Gold Medalist, Sydney 2000, Member of the U.S. Olympic Team, Athens 2004)

Asia Release
From: The America-Israel Friendship League Contact: David at Pop Media 201.280.6182 david@popmediamarketing.com
PRESS RELEASE
Tucson Symphony Orchestra to Perform Daniel Asia's ''Why (?) Jacob'' for Israel's 60th Birthday
The America Israel Friendship League is proud to announce the performance of composer Daniel Asia's new orchestral version of his piece ''Why (?) Jacob'', by the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. The work was commissioned by the AIFL Tucson Chapter in honor of Israel's 60th Birthday, with the generous financial support of the Grusin Family, in memory of Butch (Leslie) Grusin. The concert will take place Sunday, April 13, 2008 at 2:00 at the Tucson Music Hall at TCC, with a reception to follow. Tickets are available by calling the TSO directly, or calling AIFL at 322-9544 for tickets to the concert and reception for $60.
''Why (?) Jacob'' is a ten minute piece whose title refers to a boyhood friend of the composer who served in the Israeli military and was killed in the 1973 war. The work is intended to remember the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for Israel.
The work is elegiac, somewhat melancholic, and certainly nostalgic. It combines both the harshest of sounds (perhaps a gunshot is even present in the piece), as well as a soft, retiring tune, that keeps reappearing, as if out of the cosmic ether, from the distant past. An episodic work, whose edges are blurred, it ends like a music box winding down, with a final, and gentle, resolution. Daniel Asia is an accomplished and inspirational composer of the 21st century who has captivated audiences all over the world with his creative musical talent. This concert is the first of a series which sets out to attract and unite audiences on a local, national and international level.
The second Tucson performance will take place in November, and will feature Asia's Symphony No. 5 also commissioned by the AIFL, Tucson Chapter, in honor of Israel's 60th birthday. This piece is scored for orchestra, soloists and choir, and has a duration of approximately 35 minutes. Texts will be based on the poetry of Paul Pines, Yehuda Amichai and Psalms, representing the American Jewish experience, the Israeli experience and the timelessness of the literature of the Hebrew Bible, which provides the foundation that unites these different views of life in the 20th/21st century. Performances of these works are also scheduled in Colorado by the National Repertory Orchestra and in Jerusalem by the Jerusalem Symphony, as well as in other major cities.
The America Israel Friendship League (AIFL) is a non-sectarian, non- political, not for profit organization strengthening the ties between the people of the United States and Israel; bridging distances to reveal the beauty, the humanity, and the modern democratic values that define both nations.
Few Americans are aware of Israeli culture, expansive history, and striking beauty of the land. Our similar natures and vital commitments make Americans and Israelis natural friends. With a special grassroots focus AIFL brings Americans of all creeds and ethnicities to Israel, and Israelis (Jews, Muslims, Christian and Druze) to the United States. Participants benefit from an experience that proves time and again to change lives and perceptions, highlighting the extent of our nations' shared values and goals - a strong foundation for any friendship!

“Peter brings tremendous resources with him on our mission and we are delighted to add his expertise to the group,' said William H. Behrer III, Chief Operating Officer, AIFL. “The goals and mission of Operation Respect and the AIFL are closely aligned and we are fortunate that we have the opportunity to unite to the benefit of Israeli’s youth and forge closer ties between our two countries.'
The mission will be led by Dr. Gene R. Carter, Executive Director of the ASCD (Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) and Dr. Charlotte K. Frank, Senior VP for Research and Development McGraw-Hill Education and chair of the AIFL Partners for Global Education Committee. Dr. Frank, also the Chair of the Board of Operation Respect, invited Mr. Yarrow to join the delegation in the hopes of strengthening a collaborative platform that can help realize her career-long passion for excellence in education for all young people.
“The chance to advance Operation Respect’s mission to create a safe and compassionate climate of learning with educational leaders in Israel is a wonderful opportunity. We hope that the “Don’t Laugh at Me' programs will benefit the students in Israel as much as they have in other parts of the world,' said Mr. Yarrow.
Other participants of the mission come from California, Georgia, New York, Oklahoma, Utah and Washington D.C.

New York, NY - November 10, 2006 - The America-Israel Friendship League (AIFL) announced today that it will hold a Reunion Day for its Youth Ambassador Student Exchange (YASE) alumni on Saturday, November 11 in Washington D.C. The reunion will bring together over 120 participants in the YASE program, including U.S. and Israeli students currently touring together in the U.S. The current group heads to Israel on November 16 for the second half of the exchange program.

From the Bomb Shelter Back to the Basketball Court :All-Star Israeli High School Team to Tour the U.S.
New York, NY - September 27, 2006 - The America-Israel Friendship League (AIFL) will sponsor the U.S. tour of an all-star Israeli high school basketball team made up of players from the north who spent their summer in bomb shelters under attack from Hezbollah terrorists.
While in the U.S. they will compete against high school teams in Princeton, NJ and New York, NY as part of the AIFL’s “Citizenship Through Sports Exchange' program.
The team will be led by U.S./Israeli basketball legend Tal Brody, the former University of Illinois star that played for the U.S. National Team in the 1970 World Championships.
Brody, a contemporary of Bill Walton, Rick Barry and Bill Bradley, turned down an offer from the NBA in 1965 to complete his education and then to play for Israel’s famed Maccabi Tel Aviv team.
He then immigrated to Israel and led the team to victory in the 1977 European Champions Cup - creating a moment of national pride that has since made basketball one the country’s top sports.
The team will arrive October 9 and tour until October 15. Highlights of the visit include:
• A UN visit with the Israeli Mission to the United Nations • Games against high school teams in Princeton and New York City • Receptions with the New York City Sports Commission, the Philadelphia 76ers and representatives of the New York Knicks

Jewish and Arab Israeli Youth Form Bonds of Friendship at World Scholar Athlete Games
New York, NY - June 30, 2006 - They were students, all from Israel, two Jews, one Muslim and one Christian. Given the most recent tensions in Israel, some of them were concerned how, and if, they would get along. But after this Sunday’s conclusion of the 2006 World Scholar Athlete Games—which strive to cultivate peace and unity among world youth—they will go home friends.
Asked to summarize what he had learned at the Games, held over the last week in Kingston, Rhode Island, Rawi Awayed, 16, an Arab-Israeli Christian from Nazareth said: “To judge people not on their religion or where they come from…just who they are, their personality.'
For the America-Israel Friendship League (AIFL), which sent the team to the Games through its U.S.-Israel ''Citizenship Through Sports'' Exchange (CTSE), the success of their sponsorship was clear: no matter the differences in religion, language, or culture, there are ways to find shared experience and create dialogue. “The core mission of the AIFL is to build friendship,' said Bill Behrer, the AIFL’s Chief Operating Officer. “We know that these students will take home with them their experiences and the goodwill their time here created.'
Rawan Qudsi, 17, an Arab-Israeli Muslim, attended the Games primarily for the arts program. Rawan’s passion is drawing, and as some of her drawings evoke (see attached article), she arrived at the Games feeling tense over the ongoing conflict. There were concerns about how she would get along with her teammates, two of which were Israeli Jews and Rawi, the Christian teen with whom she shared a hometown in Nazareth. The two had known each other at home but, against the backdrop of escalating tensions between the region’s Muslim and Christian Arabs, they had not been friendly. The four students also discovered something else about their religious diversity: it was of great interest to the local news media. They were interviewed by reporters from the Providence Journal, the Boston Globe, the Rhode Island Jewish Voice and Herald and NBC Channel 10. That was a degree of attention they weren’t expecting, but in one of the interviews Maayan Naimi, 19, an Israeli Jew from Herzliya, was happy to explain to the other participants that Israel is a “beautiful country, not so different from others.'
Concluded the AIFL’s Bill Behrer: “We know they’ll go home with a different perspective on their lives in Israel. We also hope that everyone they met here will want to learn something new about Israel too.'
(In a sudden unfortunate turn of events Maayan and her friend and teammate, Tair Kowalsky, 19, had to return to Israel on Friday morning, two days before the games ended. After the Palestinian siege across the Gaza border resulting in the murder of Israeli soldiers, the abduction of Corporal Gilad Shalit and the IDF’s consequent incursion into Gaza, the girls were called back on active duty.)

American and Israeli Youth Discuss Mideast Crisis via AIFL Web Conference
Stories from the Bunker: American and Israeli Youth Discuss Mideast Crisis via AIFL Web Conference
NEW YORK, NY - August 9, 2006 The America-Israel Friendship League (AIFL), in partnership with HebrewOnline.com, sponsored a web conference this week that brought together American and Israeli students to discuss the impact of Hezbollah’s missile attacks on Israeli civilians. As part of a broader initiative by the AIFL to bring to the surface a diversity of voices from Israel about the conflict, the web conference helped the American students—who took part in the conference from New York, California, Arizona, Nebraska and Utah—understand in vivid detail the price being paid by Israel for defending itself against daily terrorist attacks.
Most of the 20 students who joined the conference had previously participated in the AIFL’s Youth Ambassador Student Exchange, one of several programs organized by the League to bring America and Israel closer together. Here are excerpts from the discussion:
Agam Rafaeli, a teen from Haifa said a high school friend had been killed by a Hezbollah missile, while another had fallen close to his house. His family survived. Haifa, though, is a city under siege with every day punctuated by sirens warning of another attack. Daily life is spent going in and out of bomb shelters then “turning on the radio to hear how many people were hurt or killed,' he said. His parents have been ''worried sick'' about Agam's enlisted older brother, currently serving in combat.
Shir Boker, 18 and also from Haifa, told the group she volunteers for Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel's newly official branch of the International Red Cross. The two years of her volunteer service have been an endless succession of crises. ''The terrible things for most people seem normal to me,'' Shir related afterwards in a discussion with the AIFL. Shir was underground at the MDA center last Sunday when Hezbollah launched its bloodiest attack on Haifa yet. ''We heard an alarm and then a big boom, really loud. People in the center thought it hit us inside,'' she said during the web conference. One of the six missiles launched at Haifa had struck within 5 houses of the center. Three Arab Israelis were killed in the attack and nearly 200 civilians were wounded. Shir stayed behind that night to help run the center while other volunteers rushed to the scene. Local residents called her for hours asking for names of victims, checking to see if loved ones were among the wounded or dead.
Israelis in the south, though so far safely beyond the reach of Hezbollah's missiles, have not escaped the hardships and sorrows of the attacks. Niv, a 17-year-old from Rishon L'Zion (near Tel-Aviv) said ''the difficult part for us is that everyday we lose friends and neighbors.'' Since the fighting began three of Niv's friends have died in combat. Elad Yeshayahu, 18 and from Tel-Aviv, agreed. ''A lot of events have been cancelled,'' he said, ''not only in the north of Israel but even the south. People believe that now is not the time to celebrate. Festivals have been cancelled and places where kids can go are closed.'' ************************* FOR MORE INFORMATION Contact: Isaac Constantine 212.213.8630 Ext. 226 iconstantine@aifl.org

AIFL Co-Sponsors David Blaine Solidarity Tour of Israel
AMERICA-ISRAEL FRIENDSHIP LEAGUE CO-SPONSORS SOLIDARITY TOUR OF ISRAEL BY MAGICIAN DAVID BLAINE
NEW YORK, NY - August 15, 2006 - David Blaine, world famous performance artist, sensationalist and “magician' arrived today in Israel on a solidarity tour of the nation. “I want my fans around the world to know that I am on Israel’s side,' he said, adding that he hopes “other performers will follow in my footsteps.'
Blaine arrived as a guest of the America-Israel Friendship League (AIFL), the United Jewish Communities (UJC) and the Jewish Federation of New York (UJA). His Israel tour includes visits with embattled residents in the north, some hospitalized with injuries from Hezbollah terror attacks, and with IDF soldiers to boost morale. Blaine also promised to demonstrate new magical feats the performer has so far kept secret.
Blaine caught the world’s attention earlier this year when he submerged himself for eight days in a giant fishbowl on display at New York City’s Lincoln Center—in the end Blaine had to be rescued, unconscious, after holding his breath for over seven minutes. In 2003 he spent 44 days without food in a glass box suspended over London’s Thames River, from which he was also evacuated by medical workers.
“Even if I just meet a single soldier or a child, I will be ready to make them smile,' said Blaine.

U.S. and Israeli Ambassadors Address Middle East Crisis
Town Meeting Hosted by America-Israel Friendship League, Thursday July 20th
New York, NY - July 24, 2006 - At a town meeting sponsored by the America-Israel Friendship League U.S. Deputy Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Alejandro Wolff and Ambassador Arye Mekel, Israel’s Consul General in New York, addressed issues surrounding Israel’s campaign to remove the threat against its citizens from Hamas and Hezbollah terrorists. They spoke to a group of over 300 people from the community.
“The United States is not prepared to dictate to Israel what Israel must do for its own self defense,' declared Ambassador Wolff, who added that Israel cannot be forced or rushed to cease its defensive actions until “conditions on the ground are conducive to a cessation of violence.'
Ambassador Mekel addressed the issue of the regional response to the conflict among Arab leaders. It is clear, he said, that a rift has opened between the more radical and the more moderate Arab regimes vis-à-vis Hezbollah, which suggests the terror group lacks widespread support in the Arab world. As for the Lebanese, “Hezbollah is like a cancer in their body,' he said, and that Israel’s efforts to cripple the organization would be good for Lebanon as well.
The meeting also included remarks from Ambassador Philip Dimitrov, the former Prime Minister of Bulgaria, who expressed support for Israel’s efforts to defend itself. The meeting was chaired by Kenneth J. Bialkin, Chairman of the AIFL’s Board of Directors.
The AIFL, whose core mission is to strengthen ties between the people of the United States and Israel, also sees the importance of continuing the dialogue on this issue. The AIFL plans to host further meetings on the subject. The town meeting reflected widespread support for Israel in the community.

Media reports framing Israel exclusively through the lens of the Middle East conflict fail to reflect our ally’s most rewarding qualities. One seldom hears of Israeli democracy. Little is known of Israel’s vibrant culture nourishing many faiths, or the tiny nation’s vast contributions to the world in science, technology, medicine, environmental protection and art.
Our unique Leadership Missions and Global Education programs go beyond the headlines, revealing the human face and the heart of Israel and Her people. The AIFL experience fosters personal connections for which no words or political actions alone can substitute.

High School Students Share Israel Experience with Bay Area
Contact: Wendy Kenin Executive Director San Francisco Chapter, America-Israel Friendship League 510.559.3137
Press Release - For Immediate Release
SFUSD High School Students Share Israel Experience with the Bay Area US-Israel Youth Ambassador Student Exchange 2006 Speaking Series takes off
Two high school students traveled from San Francisco to Israel last fall and are speaking in public forums about their experiences. Sponsored by the San Francisco Unified School District and the America-Israel Friendship League, 2005 Youth Ambassadors Alvin Rivera and Farah Khalil spent the month of November exploring key places in Israel, plus Washington, DC and New York City with an international delegation of 80 high school students. They are available for interviews, as well as for speaking engagements.
Farah Khalil, a junior at Thurgood Marshall, comes from a Palestinian family living first generation in the US. Farah was excited to be able to meet his relatives in Israel for the first time, and to find that the Israeli Parliament includes 10 elected Arab members. He was surprised to be so welcomed by his Israeli host family in Resion Le-zion, noting hospitality as one of many similar cultural values he discovered between Jews and Arabs. “As a Palestinian, I was surprised to find that I was able to connect and communicate with Israelis on a personal level,' Farah remarks.
Alvin Rivera, a junior at Mission High, comes from a Catholic and Jewish Latino family living in the Mission district. Alvin describes, “The trip was the most memorable time of my life until then. I met people from across the world, from different backgrounds and yet with similar experiences… This experience brought me one step closer to finding who I am. I’m sure that it will influence my life choices into the future.'
Esther Casco, Executive Assistant to the San Francisco Board of Education, comments on the boys’ report, “They were extremely dynamic in their presentation before the Board and you could feel the energy from their incredible journey. I felt like they came back from this experience with a true understanding of other people.'
Both students are members of the SFUSD’s Student Advisory Council, a group of young leaders representing each high school of the school district. They were invited to participate in this year’s program by Assistant Superintendent Dr. Frank Tom, head of high schools and district liaison to the San Francisco chapter of the America-Israel Friendship League.
Says Dr. Tom, “It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that we continue to partner with the America-Israel Friendship League to promote a united vision for cross-cultural understanding and sensitivity… We look forward to every opportunity for students from Israel and from our high schools to engage in a rich conversation regarding cultural differences and similarities, human understanding, and world peace.'
Founded in 1971, The America-Israel Friendship League bridges gaps and enriches lives around shared democratic values of pluralism, tolerance and inclusion. We forge alliances that transcend religious, ethnic, political and geographic boundaries. The AIFL is a non-sectarian, non-partisan organization. The 2006 San Francisco YASE was funded by the Milton and Sophie Mayer Fund, the Jewish Community Federation, and many private individuals.

THE BRONX BOROUGH PRESIDENT CARRION AND THE AIFL LAUNCHES LEADERSHIP PROGRAM
Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión, Jr and Dr. Charlotte Frank, Chairwoman of the Executive Board of the America-Israel Friendship League announced the selection of 10 participants for their new leadership training and community building initiative, the Hispanic / Israel Young Professional Program.
At the announcement, Carrion stated, “In a City with so much diversity, I believe that it is critical that we are developing young leaders who can see across the divide between different ethnicities and cultures. I believe that these young men and women that we have selected for this leadership training program will do a terrific job in setting the example of what can be achieved in promoting understanding between Hispanics, American Jews and Israelis.'
The announcement was made at the official launching reception for the program at Bruckner Bar & Grill in the Bronx. The reception was attended by nearly 60 people including representatives of the Israeli government, and leaders from the Jewish American, Israeli, and Hispanic communities.
''The America-Israel Friendship League (AIFL) is pleased to join with the Bronx Borough President in launching the Hispanic/Israel Youth Professionals Program,' Dr. Frank said. “Adolfo Carrion's ongoing efforts to develop and strengthen understanding between the Hispanic community of New York and the State of Israel are very much welcomed, and the AIFL will incorporate this new program as part of its grassroots, non-sectarian community outreach.''
During this six month program, the participants will gather once a month for a three hour workshop to learn how to promote mutual understanding between Israeli, Jewish American, and Hispanic communities. The participants, aged 22- 39, were selected competitively based on applications and interviews. Numerous applications were received and ten well-qualified candidates were chosen, representing members of the Israeli, Jewish, and Hispanic communities.
One selected participant, Fernando Arzola, a Professor at Nyack College and a resident of the Riverdale section of the Bronx, said, “I think there is perhaps no greater weapon against misunderstanding than authentic dialogue. My hope is that the dialogue between this small group of Hispanic and Jewish leaders will be a humble seed sown towards greater understanding and justice in the Bronx and in New York City.'''
