    1801-1825
Former Presidents John Adams and Thomas Jefferson express pride in our nation’s laws that protect freedom of religion, with special note of the persecution that Jews have suffered. President John Quincy Adams was the first of many presidents to advocate the return of the Jewish people to their homeland, then known as Palestine. His letter to Major Mordecai Manuel Noah in 1825 supported the “rebuilding Judea as an independent nation.”
