The Timeline of Events Between the U.S. and Israel

A remarkably distinguished group of American leaders founded the AIFL in 1971. Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey, Senators Henry "Scoop" Jackson and Nelson A. Rockefeller, civil rights leader A. Philip Randolph, Raymond M. Patt, Herman Z. Quittman and Congressman Herbert Tenzer all served among the League's founders.

These Americans admired Israel's bold and enterprising spirit. They admired the tiny embattled democracy's hope and perseverance, and marveled at Israel's uniquely harmonious balance of forces old and new-an occasionally tense, though mutually enriching marriage of faith and tradition with innovation and modern egalitarian principles. The founders saw America's likeness (and greatness) reflected in Israel, and decided to honor the vital historic allegiance between our nations. They established the League to promote a strong and enduring friendship extending beyond both governments to our nations' citizens. The friendship they envisioned would thrive on mutual understanding and shared commitment to democracy. The America-Israel Friendship League remains committed to their vision.
